Designer: Eric Pfeiffer

Taking advantage of the unique properties of a new material called Perennial Wood we developed a line of outdoor furniture for Council, a premium furniture brand from San Francisco. The outdoor collection includes a stacking chair, lounges and a series of tables. The collection is minimal and restrained, almost utilitarian in its material use. Each piece boasts a simple curve in wood lightly resting on a powder coated rod base to create an expressive, inviting form. Perennial Wood is a beautiful, humble material providing unique aesthetics and performance characteristics not currently available for the outdoor market.

The Project
Perennial Wood is a modified wood product developed by Eastman Chemical Company. Eastman contracted with Pfeifer Lab to develop and execute a design strategy to introduce the Perennial Wood to the furniture market.

What We Did
Working with the Perennial Wood Market Development team, Pfeiffer Lab proposed a design strategy to match an ambitious business goal to expand into a new market for their new material. Perennial Wood was originally launched as a consumer decking product as well as a material for manufacturers to use when looking for a real wood product that would perform outdoors.

The tasks were to create innovative designs that could 1) generate short term sales opportunities 2) create a buzz about the material in the design press 3) gain credibility for the material with actual products in the marketplace, and 4) introduce Perennial Wood to premium furniture brands for long term sales relationships in the furniture industry. To achieve these, Pfeiffer Lab created a collection of outdoor furniture concepts to highlight the advantages of Perennial Wood for the furniture industry.

The material itself is made from domestically sourced Southern pine that is modified through Eastman’s proprietary TruLast Technology. The process changes the cell structure of the wood and offers improved durability and resistance to weathering and warping compared to untreated wood, making it ideal for outdoor furniture applications.

Pfeiffer Lab then painted a compelling picture of how to use the material through furniture prototypes and CAD drawings that combined the aesthetic properties of pine plus the mechanical and technical properties of the modified wood. We captured the beauty and innovation of these prototypes in a photo shoot to tell the story of how people interact with the furniture, and how it fits into an environment. Pfeiffer Lab also advised the Perennial Wood team on design press opportunities, and communicating the design advantages of the new material using the assets developed through the program.

Results
- Using the prototypes and drawings, we worked with Perennial Wood to cultivate US-based manufacturing resources to allow a rapid, scalable production of the designs.
- A selection of these innovative designs will premiere at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, May 15-19, 2012.
-Stay tuned for future announcements of these designs at a range of furniture brands, from boutiques to large retail outlets, later this year.

OK, it’s not really a secret. We simply believe the best spokesperson for a product is…the product.

In a nutshell, we design products and help our clients bring them to market. It seems simple but the process can be very challenging and even painful at times. We know the drill because we have put hundreds of products into the market. We have developed a method to execute design strategy, especially for products in a crowded marketplace.. Through a developed network Pfeiffer Lab offers a fast track to getting products manufactured and ultimately on the shelf. We also offer the capabilities to evangelize the design within specific marketing or sales channels.

We love the journey because it is different each time.

PHILOSOPHY

Our reductive design approach relies on creating beauty. We use materials honestly and address the real needs of end users. It is this pure design ethos, coupled with a deep understanding of usability and manufacturing, plus a casual west coast sensibility that results in our timeless products.

We don’t talk much about sustainability because it is a loaded term. We believe you should take it for granted that well designed products are healthy for you, were made fairly and at the end of their useful lifecycle can be reused or recycled --that is, if you don’t want to keep it forever.

We’re working hard to bring products to market by working with materials and manufacturers here in the USA wherever possible.

Good Design Doing Good
When “green” isn’t good enough, you got to be “blue green”. Pfeiffer Lab collaborated with Hub Strategy to develop a cause-based marketing campaign using Plyprints to help save the whales through product design.

The Project
Sea Shepherd is best-known for their aggressive protection of whales and dolphins from illegal whalers, and is featured in the Animal Planet series “Whale Wars.” This project, from Hub Strategy and The Utility Collective, reflects their position of defending the defenseless.

What We Did
Pfeiffer Lab created a special-edition Plyprint to support the Sea Shepherd conservation organization. This cause-based marketing strategy for Sea Shepherd created additional exposure and revenue for The Utility Collective, Hub Strategy, and Columbia Forest products. Pfeiffer Lab worked with Hub Strategy to develop the artwork, put the manufacturing in place, created distribution and sales channels to get the product to market. The project and efforts generated sales for Sea Shepherd and over 15 blog placements about the program.

Guided by utility the Cross Dresser Collection offers clean lines and ample storage. The timeless forms utilize hand-selected veneers on US made PureBond™ formaldehyde free plywood panels. No particleboard or MDF in this product, only US made plywood and hardwoods from Columbia Forest Products.

The simple lines of the collection create timeless pieces that are at home in any environment. Each piece boasts a simple hand-machined aluminum drawer pull providing a hint of metal to contrast the warm wood veneers.

Unique to this product, we were able to follow the process from forest to showroom. We think seeing logs become dressers is cool. From the sustainably managed forests and wood milled in Oregon to our factory in Arizona, we watched and met the people that helped to bring this product to life. Over a year in the making this project was truly a labor of love. We believe the close connection to the making process is what guides us to design and provide the best product. This collection is available at The Utility Collective.

After 10 years selling worldwide as an indoor product we are taking it outdoors through the efforts of a great collaboration between Pfeiffer Lab, Offi & Company and Loll Design. The new Metal Mag is made in the US in aluminum with a powder coated finish built to withstand the rigors of outdoor living. Welcome to the pool party Metal Mag Table, here’s to another 10 years!

Inspired by campfire rings from the California National parks system the Fire Ring is made with 3/16 thick steel and has a solid raised internal floor to contain the ashes. When in use the vertical cut-outs cast a windmill pattern of orange light on the surrounding area. Two horizontal cut-outs help in moving the Fire Ring to different locations.
Add the recycled poly top and the Fire Ring doubles as a cocktail table when not in use and the poly top also helps keep rain and snow out. The steel is unfinished and will develop a nice rusty patina over time.
This Fire Ring will last a lifetime with zero maintenance.Made in Duluth, MN, USA.
